What is the Katapayadi ?
कटपयादि (Katpayadi) The system of encoding numbers as words, replacing each digit with a letter, was developed in ancient India. Each of the letters क,ट,प,य is assigned a number 1.
The consecutive letters are given the number 2, and so on, thus giving rise to the name कटपयादि.
Multiple characters can be mapped to a single number, although there is only one number for each character.
Thus, the system allows a number to be represented in several ways.
Where is the Katpayadi method used?
This system has traditionally been used to encode the values of important numbers. a famous example of this is
भद्राम्बुद्धिसिद्धजन्मगणितश्रद्धा स्म यद् भूपगी:
~ सद्रत्नमाला (शङ्करवर्मणः)
In the Katpayadi system, value is 314159265358979324, which represents a value of π up to 17 decimals.
This verse encrypts the value of pi (π) up to 31 decimal places.
गोपीभाग्यमधुव्रात-शृङ्गिशोदधिसन्धिग॥
खलजीवितखाताव गलहालारसंधर॥
How Katapayadi Ancient Method of Encoding work?
Verse from सद्रत्नमाला (sadratnamala ), given on the front page, describes the method to be followed.
नञावचश्च शून्यानि संख्या: कटपयादय:।
मिश्रे तूपान्त्यहल् संख्या न च चिन्त्यो हलस्वर:॥
- Consonant values are given in the table below.
- Vowels, such as अ, आ, इ, .. etc., are assigned the value 0.
- In a joint letter, only the last consonant, the one that appears with a vowel, is to be considered.
- Consonants without a vowel (हलन्त) are to be ignored.
- A general rule is – “अङ्कानाम् वामतो गतिः“, that is, numbers go from right to left.
